What you'll learn in this stone carving class:

In this popular one-day workshop, you will have the opportunity to carve your own stone, an art form that is not typically accessible.

For beginners and experienced sculptors alike, you'll be guided through the process of looking into the rock for imagery, carving into material, planning and forming a sculpture and using tools. Hand-carving techniques will be demonstrated and stone carving lore will be discussed. Safety in the studio and tool sourcing will be addressed. You will leave with a stone sculpture in hand. All materials will be provided. If you have a past stone you need to work on, there is a byos (bring your own stone) option!

Important: You will need to bring safety glasses, gloves and mask. Because of new social distancing requirements there will only be room for six stone carvers in studio at any one time.

Ample Parking. MBTA accessible #62 bus goes right past it. BEDFORD RAILROAD STATION was built in 1873 by the Middlesex Central Railroad. The building was a focal point in Bedford for many decades. Passengers bought tickets from the agent there for travel to Boston, Concord and Billerica. A Railway Express office handled shipments of parcels. The B&M Railroad decommissioned the Depot in 1958; and the Town acquired the property in 1999. In 2014 the historical building was renovated and is where the stone carving classes reside!

The class was enjoyable and well run. The only think that might have been done better is an early introduction of all of the tools. The instructor waited until he felt it was an appropriate time to introduce the next tool, but different people were progressing at different rates, so having that up front might have been useful.

I truly enjoyed this course. Scott created a relaxed environment where we were able to harness our own creativity and he helped guide us with the tools on an individual basis. The format was very much open shop which allowed us to create without being concerned about where we are in the process. Looking forward to going back for another round!

“Instructor” was a nice guy but didn’t teach much. He gave us tools and just had us start carving. He also randomly selected people to choose the best stones first. I had an idea of what I wanted to make but couldn’t with the stone I got. In the future, I would suggest a lower priced class for 3 hours (5 is a lot and $140 is too much to do it more) where we all get the same stones and try to make the same things (few options). He should also spend 1/2 hour demonstrating some basic techniques first.
