Class Description

Description

We'll demonstrate the basic procedures for dyeing with immersion and direct dye methods. You will learn how to create formulas to achieve your own custom colors, and how to balance colors to create bright / muted tones and shades. For this introductory workshop, we'll focus on the fundamentals of solid color dyeing and some creative effects such as ombré patterns.

Anyone who wants to learn the basic tools and techniques of working with natural fabric dyes can apply this skill to so many things. You can reinvent and repurpose your clothes or your home decor, or just focus on the textile and make art!  It's a fundamental tool with many uses--a creative and often practical form of expression that has no boundaries.

Important Things to Note:
  • Bring any fabric or old dress or t shirt, just make sure it is 100% natural, so cotton and silk is best. Fabric scraps are OK too.
  • We'll provide materials: plastic gloves, dyes, soda ash, cotton fabric, plastic bottles, rubber bands, hangers and buckets.

  • To Dye For: An Intro to Fabric Dyes

The Fabric Dyes class was such a fun experience. Rawan was an amazing teacher, and super sweet. She really encouraged us to explore our creativity. I also enjoyed the intro to color theory and inspiration, but there was definitely tons of time to get our hands dirty and dye fabric. We started with swatches and then switched to larger tapestries. I loved experimenting with the colors, and the small class size really made it interactive and fun. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone who is interested - truly fun and a great learning experience!
