Class Description

Description

Master the art of studio landscape painting by learning to translate photograph references and preliminary sketches into compelling finished artworks. This course teaches essential composition fundamentals, color mixing mastery, and sophisticated atmospheric techniques that infuse paintings with emotional depth and visual drama. You will learn systematic approaches to landscape design, using value relationships and simplified geometric shapes to create effective depth perception and visual interest in your compositions. The instructor provides live demonstrations and delivers individualized critiques on your work throughout each session, offering personalized feedback to support your artistic development and visual sophistication. All experience levels are welcome, though some prior drawing experience is beneficial for success in this course.

Materials Checklist:

  1. Photo reference displayed on an iPad, tablet, or laptop for easy reference during painting; alternatively, print large-scale photographs at least as large as your intended finished painting dimensions for optimal detail visibility
  2. Painting surfaces, including one smaller canvas or panel (11 by 14 inches or smaller) for preliminary sketches and compositional studies, and one full-size primed canvas or panel for your finished work. Universal acrylic priming is acceptable, though oil-primed surfaces are recommended for superior results and longer working time. A cost-effective approach uses an oil primer applied over inexpensive pre-primed canvas. Gamblin oil primer is recommended with a minimum one-week drying time before use
  3. Palette for color mixing and exploration. Wood palettes should be prepared with linseed oil before initial use for proper paint adhesion
  4. Brushes selected to support efficient, consistent mark-making and varied effects. Assemble four to five quality brushes, including bristle flats and filberts ranging from 1/2 inch to 1 inch width (sizes 4-10), a 1/2 inch nylon flat for precision linear work, and one large 2-inch flat brush (hardware store chip brushes work well). Include palette knives for mixing, cleaning, and creating sharp edges
  5. Brush protection using a roll-up carrier, zippered case, or plastic tube for safe transport and equipment preservation
  6. Paint palette consisting of eleven carefully selected colors; flake white, Cadmium yellow lemon, Cadmium orange light, Transparent iron oxide, Cadmium red light or Naphthol red, Quinacridone rose, Anthraquinone red or Alizarin crimson permanent, Ultramarine blue, Cobalt teal, Manganese violet, and Sap green
  7. Medium such as slow-drying fluid or gel medium to extend working time and improve coverage. Rublev Oleo gel is recommended for optimal blending properties
  8. Brush cleaning container and solvent. A sealable metal container holds Turpenoid odorless mineral spirits or similar non-toxic solvent for brush cleaning and maintenance between sessions
  9. Small sketch pad and pencil for preliminary planning, color notes, and compositional notations
  10. Vine charcoal for initial composition layout on canvas and value study
  11. Spray fixative applied indoors must be casein-based for safety and indoor air quality. Spectrafix functions well for this purpose
  12. Paper towels and cotton rags. While paper towels suit messy cleanup tasks, single cotton shop towels often serve entire painting sessions effectively and economically

Note on Lead White:

Flake and Cremnitz white refer to traditional lead white formulations made using lead carbonate and lead sulfate pigments. These compounds present toxicity primarily through ingestion and remain safe for standard studio practice, including protective measures like avoiding eating while painting. Lead white offers superior mixability, transparency, and working properties compared to titanium white, making it ideal for traditional painting techniques and glazing applications. Williamsburg, Michael Harding, and Rublev are locally available quality brands; RGH offers significantly lower costs but requires online ordering from specialized suppliers. Titanium white is acceptable if you prefer, though lead white properties better support the methods taught in this course and produce superior luminosity results.
