Join multidisciplinary artist and educator Julia Norton for a deep dive into the fascinating world of natural color!
This course explores the uses and histories of natural color materials, such as pigments, inks, and dyes. We will look at rare materials firsthand — from lapis lazuli stones to cochineal insects — make our own paints and other art mediums, and study specific examples of color use from ancient to contemporary art. Together we will push our art making to a greater realm, centering the colors used for all the beautiful potential they carry.
Less than 200 years ago, all natural color materials came from nature. They have shaped our world throughout history, and it is impossible to separate what gives an art object its color from the world events circling its production. This connection stems from where the color comes from, such as specific minerals from the dirt, or plants from the landscape; how far the material traveled to get to where it is used; and the associations and intentions of the artist who made it. In this class we will explore these considerations, and make art that speaks to our personal and collective stories, our relationships with nature, and explore new techniques. Artists working in any media will be able to broaden their concepts and intentions through this intensive consideration of color materiality.
Tuition includes $25 materials fee.
