Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this drawing class:

Participants in this class will learn to draw using traditional Academic techniques. The elegant lessons of the late nineteenth century Cours de Dessin or “Drawing Course” of Charles Bargue and Jean-Leon Gerome will be used to train the eye to see accurately and to provide a solid foundation for the creation of highly rendered drawings.

Bargue’s approach to studying drawing has proven particularly effective in giving users the skills to develop their work in a clear, logical, and systematic way.

Important Things to Note:

For Beginner to Advanced Level.

Q&A

Q: Can I make up a class if I miss one?
A:
No, there are no makeup classes. Because art is taught with demonstrations and demonstrations are time consuming, if one person misses the class each week, the instructor would spend the first part of each class repeating the demonstration from last week before moving on to the next lesson, which isn't fair to the students who attended. That said, most of our classes are taught atelier style. If there is a demonstration during the particular session, after the demonstration, the instructor goes to each student to work with them on a one-on-one basis. During this time, the instructor can work with you if you missed the previous week to talk and explain what to do.

Q: Are materials provided and included in the cost of the class?
A:
 No. Supply list includes:
  • A range of at least four pencils (please include 2B, B, H, and 2H).  Derwent and/or Faber-Castell are recommended.
  • Sennelier or Faber-Castell Natural Charcoal. OR…  Fusain Nitram charcoal (Soho Art Materials or NY Central) -1 packet of soft grade (B), 1 medium grade (HB), and 1 hard grade (H).  OR…  Conte’ brand Pierre Noire charcoal pencils – 1 hard grade (H), 1 medium grade (HB), and 1 soft grade (B).
  • Kneaded eraser.
  • One pad of good 18” x 24” drawing paper—such as, Strathmore 400 Drawing series.
  • Pencil sharpener or utility knife, X-Acto blade, or box cutter (for sharpening pencils).
  • Artist's masking tape.  Acid free is best.  Blue low-tack painter’s tape is also nice.
  • Drawing Board- a piece of masonite or similar material, no smaller than 18" x 24".
  • One small rectangular hand mirror.
  • One inexpensive utility clamp-on light (approx. $10.00 at Kmart or Home Depot).
  • 75 Watt soft white bulb.
  • Long extension cord for lamp (8’-10’ recommended).
  • One fairly rigid dowel (approx. 2’-3’ long x 3/8” to 1/3” wide) to be used as a mahl stick.
Optional:
  • Rolled paper stumps: small, medium, and large.
  • Small pencil point sharpening board with sandpaper.
  • One stick of white artist’s chalk (Note: This usually comes in pencil form.  Conte’ makes a nice artist’s chalk.  However, please do not get the greasy stick version.  The chalk should be “dry”.)
  • One sheet of Ingres, Strathmore, or Canson Mi-Tientes charcoal paper—light grey or pale blue in color.  Recommended size: approx. 19” x 25”
Recommended reading:
  • "Charles Bargue: Drawing Course" by Gerald Ackerman, ACR Edition.
  • “The Art and Science of Drawing” by Harold Speed, Dover Publications.
  • “The Artist’s Complete Guide to Figure Drawing” by Anthony Ryder, Watson-Guptill.

Refund Policy

100% refund will be issued up to seven days after the first class. After this, no refund will be issued.

MAKE-UP POLICY
Unfortunately, we do not offer makeup classes. The instructor can tell them what they missed. Most of our classes are taught atelier style. If there is a demonstration during the particular session, after the demonstration the instructor goes to each student to work with them on a one-to-one basis. During this time the instructor can work with the student who missed the previous week, talk with them and explain what to do.
