Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this figure drawing class:

This six-week course aims to introduce students to techniques and styles of classical figure drawing, with a focus on the nature of shadows as they pertain to modeling the forms of the human figure.  We will draw weekly from a live model via Zoom, focusing on one or two long-poses, as well as devote one week to drawing from the works of the Old Masters. Each week will begin with a lecture, and students will have the opportunity to practice new techniques and develop their ongoing drawings during and after a demonstration by the instructor. This will be followed by individual critiques. The online nature of this course provides the rare opportunity for students to follow the instructor demonstration while drawing from the same perspective. Class content will be tailored to the specific group of students.

SUPPLY LIST:

(https://www.dickblick.com/ ships art supply orders quite quickly.)

  • Graphite Pencils: 5H, 2H, HB, 2B, 4B, 7B. I use STAEDTLER. Any art store brand is fine. 2B is the most important pencil to have, or something close to it. A range is good, but one or two pencils works.
  • White charcoal pencil (white chalk). GENERAL’S. Other brands are okay too.
  • Toned Paper (colored paper): Canson Mi-Teintes Drawing Papers. Moonstone, Light Blue, Sky Blue ,Flannel Gray, Steele Gray, are all good color options (medium to lighter tones). Papers come in large 19 x 25 inch single sheets. One to a few sheets needed. You can cut the sheet to smaller sizes to make multiple drawings.
  • Drawing Pad or Sheets of White Paper Strathmore 400 Series (medium surface drawing paper) 18 x 24 inches. Good for graphite or charcoal. NOTE: A full pad of white paper is not essential. A Few sheets of white paper (any art paper, medium grain, good for graphite) is fine. Whether working on white or toned paper, I prefer to have the full Strathmore Drawing Pad underneath to pad the drawing. This is, however, not required.
  • Kneaded Eraser Any brand fine. PRISMACOLOR is my preferred brand.
  • Drawing Board and 4 Clips Cut a piece of foam board (any art store has this) to the size of your drawing pad, or use what you have. Masonite or other drawing boards are fine too. I prefer big binder clips. Just make sure the clips are big enough to fit around drawing pad and board.
  • Utility Knife/ Pencil Sharpener I use the blade of a utility knife (any hardware store or art store) to whittle/ sharpen pencils into long, fine points (about a ½ inch length tip). If you’re not comfortable trying a utility knife, bring any pencil sharpener of choice, preferably one that creates the longest tips possible on sharpened pencils. Note: charcoal and white charcoal are softer and break easily in regular pencil sharpeners!
  • Sandpaper (Strips or blocks) For fine-tuning sharpened pencil points and charcoal.

Optional:

  • Alternative Toned Paper Strathmore Artagain. This is less textured ( finer grained )than the Canson.
  • Tombow MONO Zero eraser, ultra fine (or an equivalent). Looks like a pen.
  • Charcoal Pencils, Red Chalk, Other Drawing Media

Alternative Supplies List:

Accommodates limited store access and limited budgets during the time of COVID-19.

  • Graphite Pencil 2B A pencil of any art store brand is preferable, but any pencil you have will work!
  • Toned Paper or White Paper Use any art store brand if you have it. Alternatively, medium to lightly toned paper such as the inside of a paper bag works! Use computer paper as a third option.
  • A Hard Surface to Draw On If you have a drawing board or piece of foam core at home, that’s best, otherwise any flat wooden panel, or piece of cardboard are good options. If your cardboard is very textured, you’ll need multiple layers of paper beneath your drawing to pad it.
  • Eraser A kneaded eraser from an art store is best, but any eraser works!
  • Tape or Clips of Any Kind To attach drawing to your drawing to the drawing board.
  • Pencil Sharpener I recommend using a small retractable utility knife (a few dollars in hardware stores or art stores) to whittle away a long point. Any pencil sharpener or sharp knife will do.
