Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this gold class:

In class, we explore Goldsmithing from traditional to modern perspectives-techniques developed in ancient times and how we use them today.

Gold is a fascinating metal. From its first discovery, gold has been captivating people – from symbol of wealth, to beliefs that it held inherent powers. Artisans began working with gold some 5600 BC. When pure, it is a rich, deep lustrous yellow  – one of only two yellow metals found on earth. It may have been brought to the earth from meteorites thousands of years ago.

Gold is an extremely malleable and ductile material. An ounce of gold can be stretched for miles – into thread fine enough for embroidery. It is malleable enough to be hammered into a sheet thin enough for light to pass through. If 24 karat gold could be a food, it would be like butter – it is delicious to work with. Too soft to wear without eroding the beautiful fine detail that can be created with it –  it is alloyed, or blended – usually with copper and pure silver to create a lower karat suitable for jewelry and other applications.

This class will also discuss how recyclable gold is – we can recycle old and broken jewelry and upcycle to something new, how to alloy gold in the jewelry studio and how to raise and lower the karat (purity), how to combine gold with other metals (mixed metals) including silver, copper, and even steel to create a unique one of a kind piece.

Q&A

Q: Cost of materials?
A:
The cost for the tools will be around $50. Students typically bring 5 pennyweights (dwt) of 24K gold casting grain. The price of that is typically 30% of the daily gold price in ounces. For example: if gold is $1000 per ounce that day, then the student should expect to pay $200-300 dollars for the amount needed for class.

Q: Can I make up a class if I miss one?
A: Yes, there are make up classes on Monday nights from 6-9 PM, or by appointment during the day during the week, so missing a class is no problem.

Q: Are materials provided and included in the cost of the class?
A:
No. Materials are not included. Detailed tool/material list will be sent after registration.
