From the beginning, still life has been presented as humble in scope and subject, but this quiet genre is filled with the dirty secrets of existence: impermanence, tragedy, faith, science, memory, opulence, life, and death. In this class with Zane York students will develop a painting using strategies derived from the history of still life, with focus placed on the Dutch Golden age. Students will learn conceptual, compositional, and technical still life strategies.
Although utilizing traditional techniques, the paintings developed will be open in subject and palette according to students’ personal vision. Each week students’ progress will be reviewed, followed by lecture and demonstration.
Week 1: “Triple Dutch: Houding, Reddering, and Schicking” (Compositional Strategy)
Week 2: “What’s the Big Idea?” (Content and Meaning in Still Life)
Week 3: “Wo/manhandled” (The Role of Brushwork in Painting)
Week 4: “The Liars Club” (Imagined Elements in Compositions)
Week 5: “Getting Around to It” (The Use of Indirect Techniques)
Week 6: “Polishing the…Painting, Without Gilding the Lily” (Refining, Finishing, and Further Inquiries.)
*“Foundational Still Life Painting” is recommended as a prerequisite for this class.
