The Mordançage process was initially created to apply as a film reversal process and was later named the 'Etch/bleach' process. Known for ‘the veils’ - an expressive use of the emulsion to create unique prints ranging from diaphanous to chaotic, this process has so much more to offer in terms of depth, techniques, and creative choices beyond the veil.
In this two-day workshop, participants will learn how to apply the mordançage chemistry to achieve painterly and illustrative effects including bleach/etch, dépouillement, veils, and redevelopment. A range of prints will be made to help the student explore more creative and technical possibilities beginning with basic photograms and continuing on with images of your choosing. This class is taught to be inclusive; suitable for those completely new to photography and experts alike.
In the first session, participants will use black and white darkroom printing to create prints suitable for the process. There will be an emphasis on notation, and creating both a range of images and duplicates to work with including test strips and photograms. The second session will be a day of guided work with the process, learning how to gain control over the media and better understand what is happening.
Students will come away with a range of exploratory prints using the process and a good foundation for future personal work. It is worth noting prints are unlikely to be dry and ready to take away immediately after class.
$75 materials fee included in tuition.
