What you'll learn in this woodworking class:

This intermediate workshop builds on skills learned during SXW 680. Students learn additional foundation skills to build wood furniture and related objects, incorporating wood physics and joinery concepts. Traditional hand tools, including block planes, cabinet scrapers, and spokeshaves are introduced, as well as how to safely operate woodworking machinery, including the table saw, band saw, drill press, and miter saw. How to sharpen and maintain hand tools is also covered. The project for this course is a modern chair based on an early modern design using basic tap and bridle joints.

Question from James H.
Hi, if I need to miss the last session due to travel, would I be able to make that up or would you recommend taking this course at another time?

Question from Rich L.
Hi. If I've never taken a woodworking class before., will I be OK in this class?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi Rich! It is best to have some prior experience building and be comfortable with using machines. It isn't an advanced design for a chair, (actually very minimal) but you must follow the safety rules and plans or it becomes complicated. This class involves getting comfortable with the table saw, bandsaw and router table. This class involves machine based joinery with use of hand tools for refining and finishing. They would classify this as leaning more towards intermediate level. A beginner can be fine in this class if they are focused, and respond well to hands-on learning, show up on time for all meetings, and are okay with following the project exactly. We have had quite a few first time woodworking students take the class do very well, however, they stayed focused and stayed with the plan.
