What you'll learn in this kids piano class:

Introduce your children to the fundamentals of music in a fun environment!

Students learn to read music and basic rhythms. Classes take place in our state-of-the-art tech lab with seven individual full-size keyboards.

Materials needed:  Please make sure your child has these two books at every class.

  • Piano Adventures Lesson Book, Primer Level and 
  • Primer Level - Theory Book:
    Piano Adventures 

Weeks 1-5

  • Get to know the students.
  • Learn how to sit at the piano.
  • Find the white and black keys on the
  • Listen to low and high sounds.
  • Try to play on the black keys.
  • Listen to the short and long, soft and loud
  • Find the groups of the three and two
    black keys.
  • Learn about the position of the hand.
  • Learn about the finger numbers.
  • Introduce the middle “C” and find the Cs
    on the piano.
  • Learn about Quarter, Half, and Whole
  • Note values and stems exercise.
  • Learn the notes “D” and “E”.
  • Finding notes on the keyboard.
  • Learn how to play and count.
  • Songs covered: “Old Clock Song”,
    “Mary had a little lamb”, “Old
    McDonald”, “I like song”.

Weeks 6-10

  • Learn about Forte and Piano.
  • Learn about the note “F”, “G”, “A”, and “B” and
    find them on the keyboard.
  • Learn about the Bass and Treble clefs.
  • Learn about the steps and skips.
  • Listening exercise: listen to the seconds and
  • Learn about major and minor.
  • Learn about different time signatures.
  • Introduce the dotted half note.
  • Songs: “I hear the Echo”, “Ode to Joy”, “Men
    from Mars”, “C, D, E, F, G March, “Dance of the
    Gnomes”, “Partners at C”, “Hey Mister Half
    Note Dot”.

Weeks 11-15

  • Learn about the notes in the spaces and on the
  • Learn about the grand staff and start reading the
    notes on the staff.
  • Revise all the material from the previous classes.
  • Repeat the names of the notes using flash cards.
  • Play different songs that we learned during the

Refund Policies:
92nd Street Y is not responsible for providing makeup classes or issuing refunds for programs missed as a result of illness, emergencies or other events beyond our control.
There are no refunds for outings, classes or workshops that meet fewer than three times per semester.
If you are unable to attend, you may contact Customer Service prior to the first date for a receipt that enables you to claim your contribution as a tax-deductible gift.
Unless otherwise noted in program description, the following schedule applies to programs which meet three times or more per semester:
  • To receive a 100% refund, written request must be received 2 weeks prior to the first session.
  • To receive a 75% refund, written request must be received at least one day prior to the first session.
  • To receive a 50% refund, written request must be received at least one day prior to the second session.
  • After that, refunds cannot be granted.
All refund requests must be submitted in writing to Customer Service. Refunds are computed from the date written notice is received.
To receive a refund, you must enclose the original of your confirmation letter.
Please allow three to four weeks for processing of your refund request. Processing fees, membership fees, auditions fees and class or exercise cards are not refundable. No cash refunds.
