Does every “great” city possess a waterfront? Historical hubs of trade, waterfronts inculcate cultures that structure and permeate modern urban space—cultures of capital, labor, leisure, sex, and, in a de-industrial age, decay. Inextricable from the history of cities, waterfronts are, by extension, inextricable from the history of transnational capitalism. What can we learn, on the waterfront, about how waterways, transportation, and the city...

Description

What you'll learn in this lecture class:

Symbolic Geometry & Sacred Beauty from Four World Traditions

Note: This free intro and series will now be offered online. It will be recorded and shared with registrants after each online program for a limited time only.

Symbolic geometry creates beautiful visual metaphors to illustrate the important questions of our time, such as “Who are we?”, “Where are we?”, and “Where are we going?” In this hands-on, interactive class, we will work with geometric motifs, and create geometric diagrams, from four different traditions to explore these questions in the arts, crafts and architecture of our time.

Topics include:

  • Western mystery traditions in Gothic architecture, including the rose window of Chartres Cathedral
  • Yantras (mystical diagrams) and mandalas from Tibet and beyond, showing us how to invite the sacred into our lives
  • The alignment of Stonehenge, Newgrange, Celtic knotwork, and the spirals found on ceremonial objects and manuscripts
  • The mystical geometry in Islamic art, which creates the garden of paradise using patterns that illustrate flowing water, flowers, and the star grid of the night sky

Join us to connect with the beauty and profound mystery of symbolic geometry, and invite the sacred into your life.
