What you'll learn in this comedy writing class:

Who doesn’t love the pleasure of literary laughter? We’re talking about essays, memoirs, articles, short stories, and novels that are humorous. It can be anything from a true story about the special hell of raising kids to a far-fetched tale of a would-be knight tilting at windmills. As Mark Twain says, “The best way to cheer yourself up is to try to cheer somebody else up.”

Humorous prose writing requires all the hallmarks of good writing plus that X factor: being funny. Here you will learn about the various types of prose humor, as well as comedic techniques and how to market your work.

Whether you seek to write fiction or nonfiction, short or long, we’ll show you how to turn sentences into smiles.

This course gives you a firm grounding in the basics of humor writing craft and gets you writing a short piece (or two) or a book.

The NYC One-day Intensives are seven-hour crash courses, giving you brief lectures that hit the high-points and writing exercises that let you immediately try your hand at what you’ve learned. Arrive in the morning with a desire to learn; leave in the evening as a more knowledgeable writer.

Intensives are open for writers of any level. Students must be 18 years or older.

Students may reschedule a One-day Intensive one time.

Humor Intensive topics include:
  • Overview of humor writing
  • Humor techniques
  • Character
  • Structure
  • Voice
  • Getting published

If you need to withdraw from class, here are your options:

For Everything (except one-session classes/events)
For a refund or credit, you need to send an email to [email protected] two business days or more before your class starts. You can either choose to hold a full store credit with us good on other classes for a year or you can opt for a refund less a $25 administrative fee and your $25 registration fee ($50 total).

If you need to withdraw after your class has started (or one business day before it starts), you won’t receive a refund, but you’re welcome to a Gotham credit less the price of Week 1 and your $25 registration fee, but we need to hear from you two business days or more before Week 2 meets for that to happen. After that point, no credits are available.

One-Session Classes and Events (Write-Ins/One-day Intensives)

For a refund or credit, contact us two business days or more before your class starts. You can either choose to hold a full credit with us good for one year on other Gotham classes OR you can opt for a refund less a $25 administrative fee and your $25 registration fee ($50 total).

If you withdraw two hours or more before it begins, you’re welcome to a full credit toward another class of the same price. (You can only reschedule once.)

A few more things:

Simply not attending class or notifying the instructor does not mean you've officially withdrawn. Credits are valid for one year and cannot be changed into refunds down the road. Some exceptions are made on a case-by-case basis for medical emergencies with a doctor's note. Refunds take up to six weeks to process. Please understand, we can't issue a refund after classes have started, even if you miss your first class. Similarly, we can't offer you a store credit one day before your second class or after that. We understand that other obligations get in the way of attending class, but these policies allow us to get other interested writers into class early enough to have a good experience, and this allows us to offer our classes at a reasonable price.

Gotham is an adult creative writing school, so our students sometimes have to miss class because of work or family obligations. Because that’s such a frequent occurrence, we aren’t able to offer any makeup classes. But students can certainly ask the teacher if there were any handouts for the class they missed.

I wish it didn't end. This was a great place for me to try my hand at writing and was almost stress relieving, while at the same time being very informative. I'd take it again.
