What you'll learn in this poetry class:

The novel's influence, Deoraíocht will be discussed in relation to Deoraíocht and other pioneering works of the same era.

The classic Irish Language novel Deoraíocht, by Pádraic Ó Conaire was a pioneering book. Published in 1910 it is arguably the most important novel from the Gaelic revival. Deoraíocht portrays the life of a struggling immigrant in a very raw and honest way. The popular theme of alienation (coimhthíos) & urbanization will be discussed in relation to Deoraíocht and other Irish language literature including Cathal Ó Searcaigh’s, Máirtín Ó Direáin’s and Máirtín Ó Cadhain’s works. Many pioneering Irish Language writers & poets were heavily influenced by T.S. Eliot’s iconic work The Wasteland. Students will be required to read the novel regularly. Various chapters will be discussed in class each week.

This course is aimed at intermediate to advanced students. Course materials will be provided.
