Keiko Hirosue

Teaches at Brooklyn Shoe Space

In 2003 Keiko Hirosue started her pursuit of shoe making by taking Emily Putterman’s (former FIT instructor) classes, following her around town. Over the years she has continued to study with some of the best shoe makers in NYC. She has continued to learn more in depth of pattern making through Eustace Robinson’s pattern making classes (also an instructor at Brooklyn Shoe Space), as well as master shoe maker Marcell Mrsan from Hungary’s classes. Keiko soft-launched k* for Fall of 2009, a collection as a continuation of her vision: chic silhouettes that can be worn from day to night, and expert construction that guarantees great fit and comfort. Keiko believes that the craft of shoe making brings people together, and that bringing future of manufacturing in NYC is not an impossible dream. After manufacturing in China, she soon realized the impact that her small operation has, and has stuck to her instincts that she can be boosting economy, even just a little bit, by manufacturing and crafting on her home ground. She has teamed up with local shoemakers at the New York Cordwainers Collective, and has brought back her footwear manufacturing back home at a smaller scale, offering her k* designed shoes made to order. Along with the eco-friendly, ethical, socially responsible trends we see often in food, she believes that the consumers will value craftsmanship and labor in the USA. To spread her vision, she teaches at Brooklyn Shoe Space to shoe enthusiasts.

The 5 day intensive class taught by Keiko was great. The workshop has all the materials and tools necessary for creating any type of footwear. The course really does teach you everything from measuring your foot to pattern making to actual construction of the shoes. She was incredibly patient with all of us newbies and really took the time to explain why we were doing a certain step and the best way to do it.

Love her class! I learned a lot of info from her. Great class for basics. If you have experience with shoe making, please do not take the class, as most people are still in the the very beginning stages of shoe making. However, 001 is a perfect for you if you want to learn info about parts of a shoe and last. Keiko also give additional info about where to purchase materials and textiles. Priceless information!
