It was good but not great. We cut mostly veggies and I would have liked to experience cutting other types of things. There could have been more individual assistance given to the students on their technique.

The students and staff were phenomenal in terms of friendliness and being helpful. However, the chef strongly disliked me for whatever unknown reason. Maybe I am the only Asian in the class. When I had a question, he would either ignore me or cut me off, but went all of his way out to help the other students in the class. When I pointed out this unfair treatment, there continued to be resentment and awkwardness in the class, that did not subside until the very end after having our meal. Also, one of the main ingredients, artichoke, was missing from the menu and 14 out of 16 students were so looking forward to making this dish that was advertised as one of the main dishes. Thus, I have mixed feelings about returning again for another JCC cooking class, but if I do, it will definitely be with another nicer chef.

The class was so much fun and helpful. I learned a lot about knives and how to utilize a knife. The class size was perfect. Chef Shaya was skilled and vivacious. Jennifer was helpful. We learned more than Knife Skills and I really enjoyed the class. Thank you JCC, Chef Shaya and Jennifer. I would definitely take another class with Chef Shaya.

I felt that there needed to be more on knife skills and less on building a recipe. I expected to have more (and larger) vegetables to practice on. While the recipe part was nice, we spent over 45 minutes making poached eggs and hollandaise which took away from the knife skills portion of the class. The instructor was good, great personality and very friendly and knowledgeable. More teaching, less schtick would be a good comment.

The class was so much fun! It was great learning a new recipe (that my husband can make) and chat with other couples. It was a nice mix of cooking and being social. I will definitely do another course there and have told some friends about it!

Decent beginners coarse. Hands on activities. Worked with chef’s knife only. Wished they had explained what other knives are used for. Would recommend.

I am happy that I was able to make the stuffed grape leaves, something that I really wanted to learn in this class.

The teacher's methods were good-- free form enough to allow independent students to work on their own, but with enough TAs that if anyone needed one on one help it was available. The reason this class received only a 3 from me is a combination of issues-- 1) the advertisement for the class sounded like it was a little higher level than it turned out to be. It seems as if I should have signed up for an intermediate class. 2) The former issue may have happened because we had a substitute. If that was the case, we should have been alerted in advance that the class would not be the same as what we'd paid for and been given the option to cancel (the teacher we did enjoy but even she admitted she didn't do the same things as the other teacher). 3) There was little emphasis in the class on sterility when it came to the food we were preparing- we were not informed what to do with food that had come into contact with the floor, to re-wash our hands if we touched anything other than food or kitchen tools, or to wear hair nets/our hair back. I would have felt more comfortable if we'd gone over those rules, just in case.

I learned a lot in this class: How to Slice better, Safer and easier, how to make poached eggs, Sauce Hollandaise. I also liked the Theory, die cook and the People participating. It was a very nice Atmosphere. Thank you. B.
