Kate Bowling

Teaches at Irish Arts Center

A classical flutist since age 8, Kate received her bachelor's degrees in music education and flute performance from the University of Michigan. More recently, Kate received her master's degree in music education from New York University. Kate has studied with Amy Porter and Robert Dick, both internationally acclaimed flutists. Kate began her studies in Irish traditional music after moving to NYC. She took lessons at the Irish Arts Center from Bill Ochs, and now she continues his mission of making the tin whistle accessible to all people interested in connecting with Irish musical culture. In addition to teaching adults at the IAC, Kate also teaches elementary general music at Bedford-Stuyvesant New Beginnings Charter School. Here, students grow academically and socially, and Kate has brought her young students into the Irish tradition. She teaches them a variety of world musics including the tin whistle, which expands their horizons and introduces them to a new community that they would otherwise never know about. Additionally, Kate performs regularly on tin whistle and piccolo with the Irish traditional ensemble the Washington Square Harp and Shamrock Orchestra.
