K. Lorrel Manning

Teaches at The Barrow Group Acting School

K. Lorrel Manning is an award-winning writer, director, actor (film/television and theatre) who currently resides in New York City. His first feature film, HAPPY NEW YEAR, based on his critically-acclaimed play (which originated at the Barrow Group) and award-winning short film of the same name, had its World Premiere at the 2011 SXSW Film Festival and has screened at over 40 film festivals since.

To date, the film has won over a dozen awards, including "Best Director" and "Best Actor" at the Rhode Island International Film Festival, the Audience Award for "Best Film" at the Oldenburg International Film Festival and the Beaufort International Film Festival, to name a few. The film has also received high-profile screenings at the Whitney Museum, Columbia University and Yale University, among others. The National Board of Review called HAPPY NEW YEAR, “an important, emotionally devastating drama, with echoes of Zinnemann’s THE MEN (1950), Forman’s ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST (1975) and Ashby’s COMING HOME (1978).” HAPPY NEW YEAR is currently available on iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, and other digital outlets, and continues to be screened throughout the U.S.

An accomplished music video director, Manning’s musIc video work has been featured and spotlighted on websites for Rolling Stone, Huffington Post and NME, to name a few.

As a theatre director, Manning has directed over thirty (Off-Broadway and Off-Off Broadway) productions. As a playwright, his numerous plays include A&J Rule the Universe (Off-Broadway, 2006), Wool (New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship), The Gift (La Jolla Playhouse, 2007) and a critically-acclaimed adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's An Enemy of the People (with Seth Barrish, 2010) among others. His other plays have been developed at various theatres throughout New York City, including the Roundabout, Rattlestick, the Lark, and the Barrow Group.

Manning has taught several acting workshops throughout New York City and surrounding areas, and is currently in his third year of teaching at the Barrow Group.

He is currently prepping his second feature film, RED HOUSE, which will shoot late 2015. He is also the creator/director/producer of THE REVOLUTIONARIES, a web docu-series, that will premiere in 2016. He is a proud member of AEA and SAG-AFTRA. He holds a BFA in Acting/Playwriting from the University of Georgia, and an MFA in Film from Columbia University.

    I'm so happy I told this class. The class was a hands on immersive experience in creating a film from a short scene. It felt like one week too short. I learned a lot about what aspects of filmmaking I'm interested in and will pursue more thoroughly. Worth the money and time!
