Emily Rosenthal & Sara Weininger

Teaches at The Art Studio NY

Emily Rosenthal is a talented artist, art educator, illustrator, and writer. She believes art enhances all aspects of life and that everyone should be given the opportunity to find their unique voice and tell their story. Emily carries this philosophy into teaching, where she seeks to help students expand their horizons and communicate what is personally meaningful through creativity and artistic expression.

Emily’s artwork uses fantastic elements to tell the stories of outsiders finding their places in the world. Using ink, watercolor, and digital methods, she creates engaging, thought-provoking stories for all ages. Emily finds herself particularly interested in the domestic lives of monsters, and this is a theme in much of Emily’s artwork and stories.

Emily graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art, with a BFA in Illustration and Humanistic Studies. Her interest in the world of children's education and illustration led her to be a “star intern” for The Art Studio NY’s children’s summer art camp for two years in a row. She has also worked with The Highlights Foundation, providing educational retreats and resources to artists from around the world.

Sara Weininger is an artist and art educator with a strong conviction about the profound communicative capabilities of art. As an art teacher at The Art Studio NY, Sara empowers her students with confidence in their art making abilities. She shows them how exciting it is to be able to convey what is uniquely theirs to see, experience, and express through artistic mediums.

Throughout her career as an art educator, Sara has worked at a number of art institutions, including The Rose Art Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and The Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum. As a warm, engaging, and caring teacher, Sara’s goal is making art and its process more accessible to the public.

Originally from New Rochelle, New York, Sara graduated summa cum laude from Brandeis University, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Studio Art and Psychology. While in school, Sara discovered her interest in psychology and the role that it plays in the process of both art making and visual observation. She earned her Masters in Fine Art (Studio Art) from Washington University St. Louis, where she continued her interdisciplinary approach to her studio art, working closely with the Wash U Philosophy Department.

Sara’s own artwork is based in sustained observation. On this subject, she says, “There is a profound effect of individual, seemingly small, and insignificant parts upon the whole. Among what some might refer to as a clutter of objects in my studio: the placement of an inhaler on its side, overlooking the small clay pot with a canvas flower, creates a specific narrative, one that would drastically change if something were moved out of place.”

It is the observation of the objects in her lived environment that define Sara’s artwork. Working with oil paint, acrylic paint, and watercolors, she integrates collage and installation into her art, as well. While her work predominantly consists of paintings and constructed spaces, it is undeniably grounded in drawing, and Sara carries her sketchbook everywhere. Her artwork has been exhibited in Boston, St. Louis, Chautauqua, and New York.
