Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this manga class:

This course is designed for adult manga lovers, who are eager to master their favorite art style. A professional manga artist Austin Bath will guide you through this journey. The class will be held IN-PERSON in our San Francisco Studio.

High-quality art materials are provided and included in the course price.

Detailed Schedule:

  • Day 1: Introduction: what is manga? Defining the characteristics of the manga style and how to begin drawing in this way. Observing various examples. Sketch simple flowing shapes and graphic elements. Study different proportions for character design.

  • Day 2: Manga vs realism. Tips on drawing eyes, hair, neck, and head shapes. Choose an established character to draw in your own style and begin to draw his or her face.

  • Day 3: Tips on drawing hair and clothing. Finding center lines and contour lines. Establishing the separation of light and shadow to suggest volume. Finish character portrait from Day 2.

  • Day 4: Focus on relative proportions of the male and female figures. Start a new pencil drawing, this time showing a character from head to toe. The focus is on fitting the character on the page with correct anatomical proportions. The body should be composed of primitive shapes.

  • Day 5: Adding details to drawing from the previous session. Strong focus on proper anatomy of torso, legs, and arms.

  • Day 6: Finish character anatomy drawing. Tips on hands and feet.

  • Day 7: Focus on gesture drawing. Begin a new drawing featuring a character in a simple pose. This drawing should have the whole character within the frame of the composition.

  • Day 8: Finish Day 7’s drawing and add color to create a fully completed illustration.

  • Day 9: Focus on dynamic poses. Begin a new drawing featuring a character in an action scene.

  • Day 10: Focus on environmental effects. Add smoke, debris, dust, and speed lines to our action scene to amplify its energy!

  • Day 11: Focus on facial expressions. Add ink and color to the action scene to finish it as a completed illustration.

  • Day 12: Focus on nonhuman characters. How to draw animals, monsters, and robots in the manga style. Begin drawing an original non-human or partially human character.

  • Day 13: Finish drawing your animal, monster, robot, or cyborg character.

  • Day 14: Finish any incomplete work or begin a new drawing of your choice.
