Wild Mushroom Foraging Adventure on Sonoma's Coast
Join us on a wild mushroom hunt with resident expert and chef Patrick Hamilton. This guy knows his stuff! With over 40 years of mushroom hunting experience, he'll help you find them, make sure you're picking the right ones, and tell you the best methods for cooking mushrooms that you discover. These are great classes for both the beginner and veteran forager.
The Sierra forays focus on morels and spring porcini, as well as other fine edibles most of you will never have seen—or tasted!
We meet up in the Eldorado National Forest—close to where the mushrooms have been spotted on reconnaissance by Patrick—and then go into the woods (first drive, then hike) with the goal of finding your dinner. You’ll ascend high elevations (around 5,000 feet), so bring plenty of water and wear a hat and sunscreen. Mosquito repellent is also a good idea for some spots.
The Sierra forays are a bit different from our coastal forages, which are more instructional. These expeditions focus on finding varieties of mushrooms, especially premium morels and porcini! There are no guarantees in mushrooming, but recons will be done before the foray to find the best spots for hunting both morels and spring porcini.
Meet in Jenner for a class on learning mushroom habitat and finding out which fungi are good enough to safely eat. After the short class there will be an opportunity for everyone to go out and hunt for mushrooms!
TAKEAWAYS:
Get a better insight about the wild foods around you when you take part in this foraging class geared toward mushrooms. You'll learn which ones are ideal to pick and bring home for cooking, while getting a better understanding to those you should steer clear from.
After class, put your skills to the test and hunt alone for mushrooms in the countryside of the Sonoma Coast.
NOTE: Mushroom Hunts will go on RAIN or SHINE! Please bring rain gear/appropriate apparel. A full list of required and optional supplies will be emailed to you with the booking confirmation.
Location: Sonoma Coast, depending on class (exact location will be specified in confirmation email)
