Description
After earning a degree in painting from UC Berkeley and teaching elementary school for 12 years in Oakland, California, Joan McLean joined forces with her brother Bruce McLean and three other partners to open the Stained Glass Garden in 1976.
The Stained Glass Garden was the first store to open on Fourth Street, which at the time consisted of dirt roads, a goat farm, empty lots, and the Amtrak railroad tracks just 30 yards away. In 1986, Joan bought out her partners and within the first year of sole ownership expanded the store threefold. In 1992, SGG relocated down the street to its current location at 1800 Fourth Street, Berkeley, California.
