Class Level: All levels
Age Requirements: 16 and older
Average Class Size: 10
Teacher: Josh Steele

What you'll learn in this photography class:

People come from far and wide at all times of the year to take iconic photos on the National Mall. The holidays are a particularly great time to capture Washington, D.C. in its most festive spirit.

Explore landscape photography in a way that will give you an entirely new perspective of our nation’s capital. You’ll learn pro-level tips and techniques that turn the ordinary into the sublime and enable you to get the most out of your holiday photos.

Josh will start with an overview of the best locations in and around D.C. to capture unforgettable holiday scenery and will also discuss how to get the most out of your shots. With his guidance and direction, you will take photos from several vantage points on the Mall before eventually walking to the Ellipse to capture shots of the White House and the National Christmas Tree.

You’ll create photographs that demonstrate your personal vision while using your own gear optimized for landscape and nighttime photography.

Topics include:

  • Overview of best locations for holiday photography in and around D.C.
  • Proper techniques and settings for landscape photography at night
  • Pro tips and techniques for capturing compelling images
  • Create captivating images using anticipation, patience, composition, and visualization
  • Hands-on image capture
  • Image review and feedback in the field

Recommended gear:

  • Although any camera will do, for best results we recommend a DSLR or mirrorless camera with manual exposure controls and lenses in the range of 28mm - 200mm.
  • For those that have longer focal length zoom lenses, those would be great to have at the class (anywhere from 200mm - 600mm).

COVID Safety Practices: Masks are optional.
