Academic Drawing

The atelier approach strengthens the emerging artists technical ability. Learn to draw what you see while learning the same academic method that the old masters learned. This ongoing program works with each individual's desired pace. A project that takes 1 student 1 week can take another 3 weeks which is wonderful for people of all types of learning styles.

Detailed Schedule

• 1st project: Simple Bargue using sight size
• This project will teach you foundational skills; simplifying lines, accuracy, drawing, shadow and light. Teacher will guide the student to reproduce the image down to the millimeter.
• 2nd project: More complex Bargue using sight size
• This project will further train your ability to draw what you see, How to abstract information and how to draw reflective light and line weight.
• 3rd project: Intermediate Bargue drawing
• This project will further strengthen your observation skills as well as portraiture skills and fine rendering.
• 4th project: Advanced Bargue
• This project will help you understand the figure while further strengthening your accuracy, detail and highly realistic rendering.
• 5th project: Simple cast drawing using charcoal on white paper
• This will be the first drawing done in charcoal on white paper, using all the skills learned from the bargues but now working from a 3d form.
• 6th project:
• Intermediate cast drawing using charcoal on white paper
• 7th project:
• Charcoal and white chalk on toned paper.
• 8th project: First oil painting! Black and white oil paint on canvas
• This is the first project done in paint using black and white oil paint and applying all the lessons you learned from white chalk and charcoal with a new medium. Explore how paint works and how to layer paint when it dries.
• 9th project: Second oil painting w/ limited palette
• This project will add yellow and red to the mix to begin learning about temperature in colors.
• 10th project: Advanced cast painting using color palette
• This final cast will be done with a full color palette
• 11th project-simple still life-pear painting sight size full color palette-w/ underpainting
• This pear project will teach you about underpainting and introduce you to 3d objects with color
• Projects 12 and 13:
• 12th project:  Intermediate still life
• This project will further challenge you with composition, shape design and color harmony.
• 13th project:  Final still life
• This final project in the course will use everything you’ve learned adding more complex material and ideas.
