What you'll learn in this creative writing class:

As Rhett tells Scarlett in the movie Gone With the Wind, “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.” (In the book version, there’s no “frankly.”) Either way it’s a good line, and you should give a damn about your dialogue. Dialogue is crucial to any kind of story—fiction, nonfiction, any kind of script. Bad dialogue can sink it like a hole in the hull, while good dialogue makes a story sail along beautifully.

Writing great dialogue is tricky. Here you’ll learn to write dialogue that sounds lifelike, but is carefully constructed so every line resonates with characterization and meaning.

If you feel your dialogue is in need of punching up, here’s your chance. “After all, tomorrow is another day.”

Dialogue Intensive topics include:

  • Real but not real
  • Stage directions
  • Characterization
  • Desire/conflict, subtext

Notes
This is a cross-genre course, applicable to any kind of writing that contains dialogue, including nonfiction.

It was a great and specific overview of dialogue. Dialogue, at least in screenwriting, is inextricably linked to plot, structure, and character so we touched on those too as they intersected dialogue.

I didn't really get anything out of this class, but it may also be my learning style. The professor was very interactive. I just felt as if it were better suited to a class on screenplays or stage writing than prose.

I learned a lot in the class. However I had 2 issues: 1. The teacher was terrific except he had not read all of the books that he referenced in the class. So if there was no context, he was unable to set up the scene since he hadn’t read the book. 2. We did exercises, but due to the time constraints, only a few of us got to read our samples aloud. As a result, I didn’t know whether I really got the concept or not.

I enjoyed this class and thought it was worthwhile. We did some useful exercises and learned skills to help with writing dialogue. The instructor answered all of our questions and gave us feedback in class.

I just finished a full-day dialogue writing class given by Richard Caliban. It was intensive and well-worth the time and money. I learned so much! I liked everything about the class but the most interesting was going over a number of different methods used by successful writers to employ dialogue in prose, theatre and film. I had never seen it broken down this way and didn't even think of dialogue in these terms before. It was incredibly helpful to understand how each approach has its own magic, depending on what one wants to accomplish. We also learned about techniques to convey emotion, keep tension, maintain intrigue, and the importance of using imagery to paint a picture of what the character wants or means, rather than having our characters expressly say what they want or mean. This will really help me improve my writing. I also appreciated that we got to practice using a few different techniques. Richard then gave us feedback on our work in front of the class and I found it very worthwhile to learn not only from my piece, but also from everyone else's attempt to write dialogue. No one felt uncomfortable sharing because we got so much out of it. At the end of the day, it all hinged on Richard. His knowledge about dialogue writing is impressive. He was able to take every comment and question, and give us specific insight and first hand examples to help us understand how to use dialogue. I'd take another class from him at the drop of a hat.
