Description

What you'll learn in this beginner drawing class:

This class will cover fundamental aspects of the visual language of drawing including perspective, charcoal tonal drawing, mark making (line, hatching, cross-hatching, etc), still-life, portraiture, figure drawing with the live model and much more.

Behind many great works of art, abstraction or realism, lies a strong drawing. Drawing is the bridge that connects seeing and conveying form. It is the key towards understanding and translating an idea into a finished piece. Drawing is the bridge that connects seeing with conveying form and space. Throughout the development of any great work of art, be it painting, sculpture, or design the formal issues of drawing- line, tone, texture, and shape remain at the forefront.

This class was a survey class, going through some different approaches to drawing. I never felt like I improved, as we kept switching approaches. It was interesting to try things, but wasn’t helpful as someone looking for critical feedback. Good for folks looking to shake things up, not for total beginners.

Allison (the teacher) explained everything well and made drawing easy - for a beginner like me

Allison is a really kind, helpful instructor. I was extremely hesitant to show my drawings, etc. but she made the environment comfortable and gave criticism that tremendously helped me to improve.

This was the first drawing class I've ever taken and it was wonderful. The instructor was so patient and gave a perfect overview to begin with. Then, in each class she did demos and gave personal suggestions to each student as needed. She didn't overly engage, allowing students to work at their own pace, but stepped in when we were "stuck." Each class had a topic which we focused on, giving us something to work on. I expected to be very intimidated, but wasn't at all. I would take this course again!

Excellent introductory class! The teacher, Allison, was super talented and patient with all her students. As a beginner to drawing, I felt like Allison set me up with the basic tools; so that I can now draw on my own and sharpen my skills with confidence. The studio, trestle, is a dream! Super spacious and inspiring. Very peaceful!

Allison was a great instructor. She was able to connect with everyone within the class and guide us throughout the course with each challenge we faced. I knew that art ran in my family and I had some skills prior to the course, but Allison helped me gain my confidence back especially with shading. That being said it has been about 10 years since I took an art class and wanted to see if there was a spark still. Allison not only showed me that I have a spark and interest in art but built that spark into the flame and passion that I have for it now. I am so grateful for her for that. With the skills and techniques that Allison has given me I know that drawing and sketching will help me throughout my life with being more appreciative, relaxed in life and furthering my imagination and career. Thank you Allison for everything that you have given me. I will continue to work on my shading and hopefully I'll be able to take your course in October. If not, I will definitely be in touch and we'll see one another again.

Allison was a great teacher! I loved how each class was set up around one aspect of drawing (perspective, still life, portrait, etc.), and how plenty of time was given for us to work on drawings. There was a good balance between critique and also acknowledging that we were here to just learn and have fun with the techniques. Would definitely recommend!

Make up a class?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi there! Trestle does not offer to make up classes, as many of the classes are full and they cannot accommodate student drop-ins from past sessions. That being said, if you inform your instructor, they will do their best to fill you in on missed material during the other class sessions. Hope this helps!
