Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this screen printing class:

In this 4-hour intensive workshop you will learn how to make your own silkscreening set-up that can run right off your kitchen table. You will learn how to prepare a screen, transfer an image, and make a print from start to finish.

We supply a tote bag, or you may bring your own t-shirt. Let us guide you through this notoriously tricky medium so that you can print at home with confidence.

Important Things to Note:
  • You will be given t-shirts and/or tote bags to print on, in class.
  • Please wear clothes that can get messy.
  • The art [design] should be no bigger than half of a letter sized paper.
  • If you are able to bring it already printed onto acetate, you will be able to bypass the tracing step of the process.
Note:
$40 Materials fee payable on the first day of class includes 4 tote bags, reusable screen, squeegee and take home instructions.

Bring your ideas and design references for what you might like to print - bold graphic shapes work best! Any additional clothing or items you may want to print on are welcome but optional.

Refund Policy

Full 8 business days before class time for rescheduling. No refunds.

I really enjoyed my time in this class! Erik was very patient and prepared for just about any question we threw at him. We made a solid use of the time allotted; I almost wish I brought along more materials to practice on. I highly recommend this class.

Eric was a really great instructor. Really enjoyed the workshop. Eric was extremely knowledgeable, but also laid back and very friendly- a nice combination for a teacher. I think the class should be no more than 6 people or there should be a larger area to work in. Wish there were a workshop to work on a little larger format as an intermediate step.

I had a great time despite an initial hiccup (mostly my fault). The class was very informational and entertaining. The instructor--Erik--was super helpful and patient. The Trestle space is lovely, albeit a little out of the way location-wise. All my expectations were lived up to. I feel like I have a very good handle on the screen printing process and can't wait to make more! (About the hiccup: Due to transportation issues, I arrived 20 minutes late--my bad!--when I tried to access Trestle, the door was locked, the doorbell did not function, and there was no indication of how to get in w/o assistance. The instructor--again, he was great--had provided his contact info in an email to all the attendees the day before. I called and texted him but got no answer so I stood by the door for another 25 minutes. The instructor finally received my messages and let me in! Luckily, I was able to catch up with the rest of the class but while I was outside I was afraid I would either need to give up on the class--and lose my tuition--or I'd be so far behind, it wouldn't be worth taking the class at all.)

Class space was too small for the number of people showed up. And in fact 2 others were supposed to be there too. As a result, it was hard to get table space for the final much anticipated printing on the cloth step. (I had smudges from others' on my work.) Instructor himself was very helpful and nice in general.

Question from Anonymous
Hi. I am looking to open a t-shirt printing business but wanted to take a course to learn about the machinery and how to use it. Will this course cover this?
Answer from anonymous
This class is designed to teach the basics of screen printing, and show that preparing, developing, and printing a screen can be done with very little resources. We print the screens by hand onto tote bags (part of materials fee), or t-shirts, etc. (if student supplies). There is no access to any larger machines or equipment in the space. Although the teacher can answer basic questions about larger scale screen production, this class is more of an introduction to the process.

Question from Taylor j.
Do you have a printer for an image I have? If not how do I print what do I bring and how many pieces of sweatshirts can I bring?
Answer from Georgia C. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi Taylor! If you are able to bring it already printed onto acetate, you will be able to bypass the tracing step of the process. You will be given t-shirts and/or tote bags to print on, in class.
Answer from Taylor j. Verified Student
Where would I get this printed ? Staples ?
Answer from Georgia C. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi Taylor! The school doesn't have a printer for your image. The image size shouldn't be larger than half of a sheet of paper or about 4 x 5.5 inches. The student can bring an image that they will trace with thick markers and plastic, true DIY style.
Answer from Taylor j. Verified Student

Question from lindsey m.
Would I be able to print on paper? Also , can I bring an image from a photo transferred on acetate to print?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi Lindsey! Here's the response from the instructor: "You can bring an image printed on an acetate or Mylar. Using a “waterproof inkjet film”, like Pictorico is ideal. We have done it using the kind of film used for laser printers or photocopiers before with mixed results. Since we don’t use a vacuum to expose screens, the opacity and the thicker weight of the inkjet film will expose better. Depending on the image, sometimes the corners don’t expose fully with the laser printer film.
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
We also use 110 mesh screens for fabric, so depending on how fine the dots are on the film, it might not hold detail as well as expected. But either way, image should be no bigger than 5”x7” As for printing on paper, again, we will be using 110 mesh screens, which are ideal for fabric. They can be used for paper, but it is just a little tricky. Since they are designed to deposit more ink, the image won’t be as fine as using a higher mesh screen. But it can definitely be done.
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
So, long answer, but yes to both. I just want to make sure the student realizes the limitations of what we are equipped to do in the class."

How many t-shirts can I bring to the class? I'd like to print on some shirts.
Answer from Kristle C. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi there. The process of getting the image on the screen takes about 2.5 to 3 hours. The last 90 min - hour the students are printing. You can bring in what you want to print and if you don't finish in class, you will be set up to finish at home. True DIY style!!!
