Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this embroidery class:

Hand & Lock are returning to New York in 2014 with their most popular embroidery courses. Students, embroidery enthusiasts, designers and the curious are all invited to study with London's top Embroidery House. Embroiderers to the British Royal Family Hand & Lock present three week long courses that can be taken as individual modules or in their entirety. The courses available are:

Week One: Introduction to Embroidery

If you can thread a needle but little else, then this week long introductory course is for you. Students will learn how to prepare an embroidery frame and plan their design before moving on to a host of decorative techniques. Popular traditional techniques as well as newer methods will be explored and explained equipping students with all the basic know how to start their own embroidery projects at home. The class is limited to 12 students and all materials required will be supplied.

Week Two: Haute Couture

Tambour beading also known as Lunéville or Crochet de Lunéville is a French Haute Couture technique where beads or sequins can be attached to a fabric. The embroidery is done with a hook working through a fabric stretched tight as a drum. Students will learn how to create a design, set up the hoop, and how to work the hook through the fabric without catching before learning the technique. The technique is popular on International Catwalks and can be seen in shows by Elie Saab and Oscar De La Renta. The class is limited to 12 students and all materials required will be supplied.

Week Three: Contemporary Goldwork

Hand & Lock are specialists in the field of Goldwork and have been creating goldwork badges for the military forces for nearly 250 years. This one week course covers the multitude of techniques involved in adding gilt threads and wires to your own garments. Over the intensive five day course, students will learn how to plan their designs, build up a three dimensional surface and apply a selection of metallic textures. The class is limited to 12 students and all materials required will be supplied.

Refund Policy

We do not offer refunds on any classes, however, students may transfer their registration for one class to another class up to 22 business days prior to the original course date. Once a student has transferred no further transfers can be made.

The school reserve the right to cancel a class at any time, without incurring any additional liability to the student. In such circumstances, we will offer alternative dates, a full refund or a credit note.

Took the tambour beading course and loved every second of it. Steph was amazing as an educator, very patient and helpful. The one and only reason why I'm not giving 5 stars is due to the fact the hours originally scheduled changed. I did not receive any notice of this so I missed the first hour of class and felt rushed to catch up with the lesson. It also forced me to miss some of the "new hours" because I had work scheduled. Bummer. I understand things change but I wish I had some notice to adjust my week accordingly. Hand and lock said they sent out an email but I never received it, and course horse sent me a reminder 2 days prior with the original hours. Better communication between all parties involved would have alleviated any issues.
