La Mano Pottery is a full service ceramic studio located in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City. Opened in 1998, La Mano provides a welcoming studio environment for beginners and experienced potters. Here, everyone can relax, learn, and enhance their creativity while working with clay.
Classes are offered weekly for those interested in hand building or using the potter’s wheel to make unique handmade items. The class schedule includes a wide array of programs for adults as well as teenagers, young children (over age 5), and for parent/child groups. Private lessons are also available.
All classes are small, and are designed to help students develop and advance their skills and creativity (see descriptions and schedule below). Teachers freely share their enthusiasm for pottery and offer personal assistance to help students realize their ideas. Ample practice time is available to all students at no additional charge, and there is always a knowledgeable studio assistant on duty.
La Mano is equipped with 29 electric pottery wheels for throwing. A separate area is set up for hand building, complete with slab roller and extruder. Six electric kilns, firing regularly to cone 05 and cone 5, allow for the production of hundreds of beautiful pieces each week. Two distinct clay bodies, and a unique collection of glaze recipes (mixed right in the studio), offer a palette of colors for all tastes and projects. Small pottery tools, clean towels and aprons, as well as an extensive library of ceramic books and magazines are made available for everyone working in our space.
Good teacher. Fun activity. Tools were all handy, clay ready and good set-up. I look forward to being able to use the wheel. One thing I’d change: it would be nice to be able to select which glaze/color will go in our pot/mug/bowl. Thanks
The silver clay workshop with Amy was very informative and fun. I was able to make a beautiful pendant and have already received several compliments on it! Working with the silver clay was a new experience for me, and I would like to do it again. The class is the perfect length to make something nice. I would recommend this class to anyone who wants to learn the basics of silver clay and make something nice on their very first try. Amy, the instructor, was really nice and took her time to answer questions and help each class member individually with his or her project.
Great class!! Barbara is not just fun also very good teacher!
Really interesting class--learned a lot and loved the end project I got to take home with me, as well as what everyone else in the class made. The teacher was great too, I'd definitely go back for another class and would recommend it to others.
Great place, & super-friendly instructor!
The teacher was fantastic and enthusiastic! Loved the class! Can’t wait to further explore the world of pottery!
Great class - plenty of time to practice. Mia was a great teacher, so chill and very helpful!
The class was great and I walked away with a piece that I was really happy with, despite never having touched silver or polymer clay before! The 'making' portion was quite rushed, so I'd recommend to the instructor to spend less time on the upfront demo and more hands-on time helping students design and make their projects. All of us in the class were surprised by the materials fee. I thought I had read the description of the class more than once to see whether it was mentioned, and I missed it. I'm still glad I took the class, but I'd recommend making that a bit more prominent in the description and mentioning the cost so students don't feel misled.
This place seems to be pretty unstructured, and the woman by the front desk was pretty rude too. However, the space itself is clean, spacious and comfortable to be in.
The class was simply amazing!
