Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this dumpling class:

Discover the flavor-packed world of dumplings!

In this fun, hands-on class we will cover the history of Chinese dumplings, discuss crimping styles, assorted fillings, dipping sauces and then we get busy. You will have a chicken lemon filling and a veggie filling. You will fill, seal, and crimp your own dumplings (making three different styles of dumplings), and then pan fry them and dip them in a sweet Thai chili sauce. Let the dumpling party begin!

No experience is required! We provide all the equipment and ingredients, which are easy to find at local markets if you don’t already have them in your home kitchen. Our events are casual and meant to be fun and instructive, not hardcore. This class is designed to be just as fun for the cooking enthusiast who wants to be a part of every step as it is for the first-timer who’s happier observing and assisting (or taste testing).

Notes:

  • Please arrive 15 minutes early to check in, especially if you’re part of a large group.
  • Guests in the same booking party will sit and work together throughout the class.
  • Our classes are set up so that booking parties will work together during class, sharing both ingredients and equipment.
  • Guests who arrive on their own may be asked to work with other single bookings throughout the class.
  • Outside drinks are not allowed.
  • Drinks are available for purchase from the venue and are NOT included in the ticket price.
  • 21+ only.

1st we (4) arrived 30 minutes late to the lesson. The express bus that was supposed to take us from Staten Island never arrived! We attempted to take another bus then saw the sim 3 was back in route and went back to our original stop so you can imagine the scurry we were in. The chef was upset at our late arrival as it understandably caused a bit of chaos switching seats around to accommodate the 4 late students! We apologized to the group & James but it didn’t make it easier! Chef James was awesome. He was at each station and taught the class well. Very entertaining! I would only ask to have left the class with written recipes as in the past. Thank you chef James and sorry to have been late! We certainly didn’t want to miss anything!

We enjoyed Christine and her assistant - embarrassed I forgot her name - but found the space a bit off-putting. Chairs were too close together and the tables not big enough to work efficiently. Next time, they should turn off the TV (I asked the bartender about halfway through the class). The kitchen was noisy - I know they have to keep working, but it was distracting. We learned a lot and had a blast, so overall it was great! Roger

I thought the class was great, a lot of fun for not a lot of money. The location made it a little tough to hear Cynthia when she was talking, but she could not have been sweeter and was very informative. Both dumpling ingredients were delicious and there were some terrific takeaways. Would definitely take another class!

The chef was great and taught us more than expected (about dough, knife skills, sauce prep). Very friendly and helpful!

My sister and I had a great time. We met wonderful people and had fantastic hand made dumplings - steamed and fried. Creating 9 different styles of closures and 2 filling gave us the confidence to do this on our own. My sis said she would definitely take more classes back home in Atlanta. And I will here in NY as well. Thanks for the inspiration!!

I thought this was a great class. Well-priced. Convenient venue. Great instructor. Could have used an additional steamer. And I was promised the recipes by email, but haven't yet received ([email protected]). And yes, I've checked spam!

There were great general cooking pearls included in the demonstration. The tasks were fun and doable and can definitely see making these at home. It was social and fun and yummy.

The only thing I did not like about the class is: I was late. I was very good in thinking of something to do. So much to eat! Was very nice.

My husband and I chose this class as an alternative to our typical dinner-out date night, and I'm so glad we did. We really enjoyed the class and learning 6 different techniques for making dumplings. Cynthia is amazing - energetic and knowledgable - she kept the entire group focused and excited the entire class. The class is held in a group setting, where you sit in groups os 4-6, and share the chopping and mixing duties. Then, Cynthia walks the group through the dumpling shapes and techniques with both square and round wrappers. The dumplings themselves were delicious - we made vegetarian and chicken varieties and are excited to make these at home. The class is held in a hotel restaurant. There is a bar in the room where you can purchase drinks. This class is a lot of fun and a terrific value. Highly recommend for a fun night out!

Question from Edgar M.
I'd love to attend this workshop but attending just me as a single person brings up the concern of having to work within a group of strangers. Socializing and coordinating with strangers takes this class to a whole different level. As a student relating to a teacher, the concept is perfect for me. Having to coordinate with stranger students with an attitude is not what I would pay for. Any chance to provide for a good student to work by himself ^
Answer from Kristle C. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi Edgar! You will work with other students in groups of 2-4. If the group size ends up being an odd number, there's a possibility that you will work alone and/or you'll be combined with another group/student making it a group of 3. Totally depends on the number of students in the class. Hope this helps!

Hi I’m visiting from the UK and would be really interested in attending one of the classes (particularly the dumplings class on Sunday 25th). However I am only 19. Is this a problem? I see that there is an age restriction to over 21 but I was wondering why this is and if there’s anyway it could be overcome? Thanks in advance. Very best regards.
