Creating Sound Effects for Games

We all know the importance of audio in games. With great sound effects, a game's world can really come alive. But with poor sound effects, the entire presentation can fall flat. Knowing that, it can still be difficult to find the right sound effects for your game. For an indie developer, the options are using stock sounds from a library, or hiring a sound designer. But with the first option, we run into a risk of having sounds that don't exactly fit your game. The second option is ideal, but can be very costly, especially for developers creating their first games. In this class, composer and sound designer Alyssa Menes will teach students some essential techniques for creating their own sound effects. 

This class will provide a great start to both developers looking to learn more about sound design, and for musicians who need to develop sound design skills in order to build their skill set and land more contracts. Students will gain hands-on experience with foley (using every day items to create sounds) and create their own sound effects during the class. In addition, they will learn about the equipment they need to create sounds (at all sorts of different price points), and what software to use in order to equalize and process the sounds so they're ready to be placed into a game.
