Art Gallery Closing Night

Q.E.D. has been proud to feature two local artists, Sharon Spell and Michael Harper as a part of our most recent art installation. Join us on this special Saturday afternoon to celebrate all of their hard work with some killer happy hour specials!

In Sharon's words:
As a comedian and visual artist I like to join these two art forms when possible. I get a laugh from discovering the hidden layers in the painterly surprises when things don't go as originally planned. Jokes fall apart. Paper disintegrates. What remains is the good stuff. In this show I continued two previous ideas, first making stencils out of paper that deteriorate with each use, and second creating "found" images in the texture of the paint. These new pieces convey my interest in how things come together and grow apart. The human hand is part of the fabric of each scene. You look confused. I'm drawn to that.

In Michael's words:
I’ve always been fascinated by graphics and am a collector of old books, comics, and any scrap of paper that has an interesting design. While I have no formal art training, I developed my craft through working in photocopy shops, drawing, taking photographs and perusing countless books on countless moldy thrift store bookshelves. It wasn’t until my wife and I moved back to Astoria and I became a stay-at-home dad that I finally applied my skills to make presentable pieces and develop a body of work. Each of my pieces represents the culmination of weeks and months of sourcing raw materials, preparation and assembly resulting in a truly non-digital, manually created piece of art. With only scissors, spray mount, and loosely-organized piles of scraps and old books and magazines, I make pieces that can be funny, provocative and thoughtful.”
