Eric Foner is a professor at Columbia University and leading historian on the post-Civil War Reconstruction period. He has written more than ten books on the topic including, most recently, Gateway to Freedom: The Hidden History of the Underground Railroad (W. W. Norton, 2015).

Martha Hodes is a professor of history at New York University where she specializes in race, the Civil War and the nineteenth-century United States. Her most recent book, Mourning Lincoln (2015), explores the reactions to President Lincoln’s unexpected death.
